A word on Justice Souter’s Retirement:
To the President:
Well done man, this came out a nowhere and its good so don’t fuck it up. First and foremost, I don’t need to tell you that choosing a Supreme Court Justice is probably one of the most important decisions you will make as president. Having said that, we all know that Souter is one of the more liberal justices and obviously anybody you pick will be about the same. The makeup of the court wont be affected at all when it comes to important rulings: You will be replacing a liberal judge with a liberal judge. This bad in the sense that it’s a shame one of the more conservative judges isn’t retiring because then you would be able to change the outcome of future rulings (I personally would like to see that fucktard, Scalia, go). This is good because you can make sure that Souter’s replacement is young and thereby making sure that he/she stays on the bench for a long time. It also gives you the opportunity to do something I would not normally be cool with, but in this situation its kind of ok, and that is playing politics with this nomination.
We all know Souter held this off until you were in office in order to avoid placing another nomination on Bush’s lap and I don’t think he’s the only one who held off. Now you want a justice with real “life” experience, that’s good but remember that it doesn’t matter who you pick if that person is not confirmable under the current situation in the Senate. Go left but not too crazy left. I know you also want to nominate a minority to the court and that you’re keeping in mind what Ginsberg said about how one woman on the bench is not enough, I agree.
To the Republicans:
Guys stop acting like idiots. The truth is that your are in a nasty situation. You have no leader, you have no platform, you have no message and you went so far right that your only remaining base is your hardcore conservatives. And guess what, you might come hurt either way. The way I see it Obama is going to nominate a Hispanic woman to the court, its just going to happen. If you don’t seat her, and I can already hear your stupid justifications for not confirming a female minority judge echoing in the halls, then that’s it. If you don’t seat her then the Hispanic vote is lost. You took it for granted in 2000 and 2004 and as a result of that and your stupid immigration and healthcare policies you lost a huge chunk of it in 2008. Denying the seat would be the last blow. If you do seat her then your base is going to rip you apart for doing so. Maybe you shouldn’t have put all of your eggs in one basket huh?! You need to become more moderate if you want your party to survive and judging by the verbatim I keep reading about and listening to coming from you guys, you still haven’t learned the lesson.
To Everybody:
Pay attention. Just because Obama nominated someone doesn’t mean you should just agree blindly. Do your own research. I personally would prefer it if the best of the best was considered, not just women minority judges. What if the best choice isn’t even looked at because he’s a man? I would like to see a female Hispanic on the court but not if that means that we didn’t in the end choose the best we had.
